CBD for Dogs is Nature's Treat!
One thing we’ve noticed since opening the shop last year, is the large number of beautiful, friendly, older dogs in the area. We always make sure to have plenty of fresh water available for our furry friends out front, and many of the pups that pop into the shop for a quick drink bring with them owners that often joke about the need for more cannabis solutions for their dogs; many of whom are facing chronic pain issues, low-energy, arthritis and even separation anxiety from long stretches alone in an apartment.
After doing a little research and reaching out to one of our vendors we decided to start carrying some locally made, naturally produced CBD infused dog treats from Apawthecary Labs. So far, the feedback for our members has been nothing but spectacular – we literally can’t keep them on the shelf and the media is always hounding us for interviews and info! Owners are always excited to come back and share how the CBD has helped:
- Mitigate dependence on pharmaceuticals
- Reduce inflammation and pain
- Improve mood and movement
- Alleviate stress, especially in cases after a recent injury or operation
Along with bringing these CBD treats into Apollo, we’re also focused on delivering more pet-friendly events and services that further spread awareness about the benefits of cannabis for dogs. Through these programs we also hope to improve health and wellness by strengthening the healing bond between owner and beloved pet.
We look forward to sharing updates as they develop because we are committed to supporting all our furry friends in Kits! Plus, with legalization on the horizon here in Canada, there are more and more people warming up to the idea of using medical cannabis therapeutically, and so we hope this will extend to more available cannabis options for pets too; but before everyone goes out to purchase a bong for their pooch, it’s important to fully appreciate the benefits, as well as the potential risks involved with giving your pet cannabis.
First, Know Your Cannabinoids: THC vs CBD
Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the ingredient in cannabis that gives users the sensation of being “high”. While THC can be utilized for lots of medical application, it is important to note here that it can be very dangerous for your pet. Dogs in particular are very sensitive to THC, as it doesn’t offer them the same euphoric high – in fact it’s not good for them at all! Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the most beneficial cannabinoids in the cannabis plant, yielding a vast array of medical benefits. Moreover, CBD has no psychoactive effects, so you can harness the healing powers of cannabis without getting “stoned”. This has proven to be a fantastic treatment option for children and especially for pets!
Second, What You Need to Watch Out For: Potential Dangers
While CBD may be useful for your pet, it is vital to note that THC isn’t! Sharing your cannabis by blowing smoke in your pet’s face, or putting any potent cannabis extract in their food can do serious damage or even kill your pet. THC affects dogs quite a bit harder than it does humans. It’s an emerging problem that has surfaced over the past few years since home-grows have become legal across Canada. The residential grows coupled with the surge of chocolate edibles on the market (which are toxic to dogs) is becoming a big danger for pet owners.
The Good News: Benefits of CBD for Pets!
There is a lot of exciting science emerging in this field, and with the social stigma surrounding cannabis starting to dissipate around the world; people are finding all sorts of new ways to use cannabis for medicinal benefit. There is no question that cannabis has efficacy for a wide variety of conditions in humans, but many are also becoming aware of how those benefits can translate quite neatly over to pets as well.
Cannabidiol (CBD) specifically has been in the spotlight as of late because of its ability to provide profound health benefits without making users high. The health benefits of CBD are numerous, and quite a bit of its efficacy comes from the fact that it is a powerful antioxidant & anti-inflammatory (inflammation is widely regarded as the number one cause of virtually every known disease, flooding the system with free-radicals and taxing immune functions). CBD can be used to help treat diabetes, chronic pain, inflammation, MS, epileptic seizures, depression, cardiovascular disease, cancer and much, much more! It also has powerful neuro-regenerative benefits, as well as potent anti-cancer and anti-tumor properties. Given the lack of access to cannabis for medical researchers for both humans and pets, we still have quite a ways to go before we understand the total spectrum of medical opportunity CBD has to offer.
So, What’s The Best Cannabis Solution for Your Pet?
Given the current climate of legalization and social acceptance, companies are cropping up all over Canada and the US that specialize in advancing CBD research and evolving product development. There are lots of unique flowers and extracts available that are certified safe for your pet. Innovative producers are breeding strains to maximize CBD levels and minimize any THC content. These are the purely ‘medicinal strains’, that are used to create a variety of CBD products. CBD oil for example, can be used to help treat an aging dog or cat, but owners must be mindful to start with a low dose and to slowly work their way toward a comfortable dose for their pets. Please consider working with a qualified health professional in advance, if possible. We encourage you to contact us for more information, and to do your own research by reaching out to locally license pet care professionals.
